No ‘red carpet’ for Indian Prime Minister Modi in UK

No ‘red carpet’ for Indian Prime Minister Modi in UK
LONDON – Fearing protests soon after his arrival here at the 10 Downing Street, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday cancelled his visit to the Cambridge University.

A large number of people had staged demonstrations against Modi, who is expected to sign several deals amounting to nine billion pounds with his British counterpart David Cameron.

The protesters carried with them placards that read ‘Modi Not Welcome’. They also chanted slogans against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

The Indian prime minister’s three-day visit to the United Kingdom comes at an unsettled time in India amid concerns over a rise in religious intolerance.
